What does the research say about acupuncture and fertility?
Research on acupuncture and Chinese herbs in fertility care is mixed. The main findings:
The largest randomised trial to date compared acupuncture with sham acupuncture in 824 women undergoing IVF and found live birth rates of 18.3% and 17.8% respectively — no significant difference (Smith et al., JAMA, 2018).
A 2021 overview of systematic reviews found Chinese herbal medicine showed some benefit for clinical pregnancy rates, while the evidence for acupuncture alone was rated low (Lee et al., Integrative Medicine Research, 2021).
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis reported benefit in some fertility outcomes, with the number of treatments a possible influencing factor (Quan et al., Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2022).
Taken together the evidence is mixed, and no reliable figure exists for how much acupuncture changes the chance of conception — any specific percentage should be treated with caution. Care here is offered as supportive treatment alongside your medical management, not on the basis of an established success rate.
When would be a good time to start natural fertility Acupuncture?
Anytime is fine and in fact, the sooner the better to optimise your body for conception. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine work cumulatively, meaning each month you will notice progress in areas such as cycle regularity, ovulation quality, digestive function, sleep, and stress levels. As these foundations improve, you naturally gain a better chance in conception.
If you have existing fertility issues, don’t wait for things to get better on their own, as there is often a much faster and more effective way to improve your reproductive health with the help of Chinese medicine. Starting earlier allows us to balance hormones, improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, support egg quality, and regulate your whole system, helping you move towards your pregnancy goals more quickly and effectively.
