Acupuncture, It’s Origins

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most widely used medical disciplines in the world today. Acupuncture originated in China more than 2000 years ago, but only in the last 35 years has it become widespread outside of China.

Acupuncture made it’s mark in the the west after a reporter traveling with President Nixon to China in 1971 wrote an article about his amazing recovery after emergency surgery with acupuncture treatment for his abdominal pain. This article which was printed in the New York Times was the first spark for the speed of acupuncture through out the world.

Acupuncture Theory

There are over 360 acupuncture points on the human body that connect to create pathways called meridians. A primary function of the meridians is to circulate Qi, (translated as energy or vitality) throughout the entire body. The meridians are also involved in the production of Qi, in a similar way we look at the Creb Cycle model in biochemistry for the production of ATP, which is essentially vitality.

Disease occurs when there is blockage or decline in the flow of Qi, this is looking at disease at it’s most base level. By placing needles in strategic acupuncture points, acupuncture can restore correct flow of Qi through your meridians and restore health. Again this is the most simplistic model to describe how acupuncture works. Acupuncture treatments are individualised, based on the individual‚ unique characteristics, for every condition there may be 100 ways to treat it, there are many ways to arrive to the same location.

You don’t have to believe in it for it to work! The proof is in our results, and just think, this medicine has been in existence for over 2000 years, and it’s still growing strong, how could something that doesn’t work survive the test of time.

Moxibustion

Practitioners use moxa to warm regions and acupuncture points with the intention of stimulating circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi. Moxibustion to be especially effective in the treatment of chronic problems, “deficient conditions” (weakness), and gerontology.

Frequently asked questions:

Q:Does it hurt?

Its similar to been bitten by a mosquito.

Q:Can it cause any harm?

Acupuncture carries the same risk as any medical procedure involving needles. To put this in perspective, the risk of harm occurring as a result of acupuncture is probably less than the risk of taking aspirin or an anti-inflammatory drug for arthritis. This assumes, of course, that the acupuncture is being performed by someone with an adequate knowledge of anatomy and medicine and is properly trained.

Q:Can acupuncture transmit AIDS or Hepatitis?

No, because all the needles are disposed of after a single use. Therefore there is no possibility that infection could be transmitted.

Q:How soon will I notice an improvement?

Some patients notice partial or even complete relief as soon as the needle is put in but this is exceptional. Others find that improvement takes longer to appear – but usually within 48hrs.

Q:How many treatments will I require?

Most people require a course of treatments rather than just one or two. At first you may be asked to come back weekly for 5 or 6 treatments. As improvement occurs, the intervals between treatments will be made longer. You may find that the effects of treatment vary from time to time.

Q:Will acupuncture cure me completely?

This depends on what you are being treated for. Some illnesses can be cured very quickly, while others cannot be cured, and many can be helped a lot although not completely cured. In such cases you may need to have repeat treatments at intervals, perhaps once every 2 or 3 months.
